The Ultimate Guide to Barcodes

A person is using a cell phone to scan a barcode on a box.

As a label manufacturer , our team at T & D Print understands the importance that barcodes play in the labelling of your products. Barcodes are a label used to display information through a printed symbol that electronic devices can easily read. Barcodes are found in many items and industries, from public services to independent retail stores.

How to Get a Barcode

To get a barcode, you will need to apply to the NZ issuing authority, GS1. They will advise you on the type of barcode suitable for the use you intend it for and issue you with your unique number/s. GS1 New Zealand can be contacted by phone on 04 494 1051, email [email protected] or find out more on their website www.gs1nz.org.

Get Your Barcode Printed

Barcodes work by offering your business a simplified process for all areas of your company, from stocking to faster information processing. These barcodes can either be printed directly onto your product, packaging, label or any other material, which can be stuck to your product. T&D Print can print your barcodes, either by themselves or add them to the design of your product label. Simply supply us with the number you have been issued and we can create the image and print it on your label.

Considerations For Your Barcodes

Barcode Size

The minimum size of your barcode depends on the barcode type and the scanning environment where it’ll be used; this can include warehouses or point-of-sale etc.

Generally, bigger barcodes scan more reliably, but our team at T & D Print can advise you further on the suitable size for your packaging, printing method and design. GS1’s website has the requirements around sizes for barcodes.

Human Reliability

All barcodes should include symbols, letters and numbers that humans can interpret in the case that a barcode doesn’t scan. Again, the location of this human interpretation depends on the specific type of barcode you’ve used.

The lifespan of product labels varies depending on the materials used and can be distinguished through the shelf life and service life. Whether you’ve bought pre-made labels or gone for a custom label manufacturer, you must ensure that your labels will last an extended period for the awareness of your consumers.
